International Women’s Day is the opportunity to celebrate the hard work of all the women who stood up against sexism and female exploitation in the workplace.
Many are women who fought for us to be here today. There is one in particular that we like to share the story on such a commemorative day – Sophie Valrose, a brilliant lady whose courage and tenacity made the male-dominated wine industry a better place for her female peers.
The Legend of Sophie Valrose
In early 1900, it was mainly women who worked in the vineyards; pruning and harvesting the vines. At the time, these women were often mistreated, over-worked and underpaid. Sophie Valrose, an audacious woman who was working at the vineyards stood up for women’s rights and drastically improved the working conditions for her fellow women in the Languedoc vineyards in which she worked, becoming a sort of a hero.
Our flagship rosé, Le Bijou de Sophie Valrose is a tribute to her courage and we share her story on the back of every bottle to her memory. Our Bijou is made from grapes sourced from handpicked bush vines, like those that Sophie would’ve harvested herself many years ago.

Le Bijou de Sophie Valrose rosé is a beautiful pale, salmon-coloured rosé with fragrant aromas of strawberries, citrus and delicate floral notes. The palate is round and creamy, with refreshing acidity and a silky-smooth finish that makes this superb rosé a perfect accompaniment with canapés, white meats, fish and salads of the season.
